Sr. Idília Maria Moreira G. Carneiro is the new Superior General of the Hospitaller Sisters.

Updated: May 27

It is with deep joy that we share this great news with you: Sr. Idília Maria Moreira G. Carneiro has been elected as the new Superior General of our Congregation for the period 2024 - 2030.

Sister Idília Maria Moreira G. Carneiro was born in Mozambique in 1966 and entered the Congregation of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1984. She holds a degree in Social Work from the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences of Lisbon. She has a Master's Degree in Spirituality and Ethics in Health, and a Postgraduate Degree in Human Resources Management.

Her hospital experience has been developed mainly in the field of management and accompaniment of the hospital mission and in the animation of the Province and Communities. In addition, she has served as Managing Director of the Bom Jesus Health Center in Braga, and as Provincial Vicar, coordinating the Province Centers and the Hospital Mission area.

"The community of sisters, after a process of discernment, elected me as Superior General. And still with a mixture of feelings inside me, I want to thank you for your prayers, your friendly presence, throughout this time as Chapter Superior and, above all, for continuing to entrust to God this journey that, as a congregation, as a Hospitaller family, we are making," she said emotionally as she addressed her first words to the Hospitaller community.

"We continue to count on your prayers so that the hospitality we carry within us may grow and become a word of hope and a gesture of service to all the most fragile people, particularly those suffering from mental illness. Welcome and we count on you and on your prayer and dedication," she added.

With a loving dedication to the service of the mentally ill, Sr. Idília develops her vocation fully with the confidence that hospitality is a call of Jesus Himself to find His face in the face of the most needy and discarded of society.

On this occasion, we also want to thank Sr. Anabela for her 12 years of service to the Congregation and the Hospitaller Family.

A new stage begins for our Hospitaller Family, but always remembering and embracing the path that brought us to this moment. May our founders St. Benedict Menni, Venerable Maria Josefa Recio and Maria Angustias Gimenez Vera intercede for our new superior, so that she may know how to abandon herself to the will of God, listen to his voice, clothed in Mercy, and know how to accompany us in our work always in favor of suffering humanity.
